The Students

- Name: Carlos
- School: Reed College
Thanks for choosing me as a recipient of your scholarship once again. The Caste Action Alliance award will be a big help. I don’t have generational wealth, and my parents work multiple teaching jobs every year to pay for my education.
Any monies I receive through on-campus work or scholarships help lessen their financial burden. I am on track to graduate with a degree in Film and Media Studies on May 14, 2026.
As an African American artist, I am also deeply inspired by the resilience of minority communities facing systemic injustice. I use various forms of visual media—drawing, painting, and photography—to express myself. I believe art has the power to shape identity, amplify voices, and strengthen communities. This belief has guided my work as a content editor for SOCU Receipt, a student-led journal that promotes minority art and perspectives; as a peer mentor for first-year students of color; and as a zine intern producing publications focused on underrepresented narratives.
After graduation, I plan to pursue an interdisciplinary master’s degree in media art, filmmaking, and creative writing. My goal is to combine storytelling with social awareness—to create works that inspire, inform, and empower. Once again, your annual support has played a vital role in funding my academic journey over the past few years. – Carlos Jaden Cabrera
