This was the third canvas I used for this painting. My first try was too graphic; the\u00a0reality was too hard to bear and too painful to share. The second focused too heavily on the crowds leaving the \u201clynching picnic.\u201d This one tells the story of the <\/span>poem, \u201cStrange Fruit\u201d by Billie Holiday.<\/span><\/div>

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root<\/div>
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze<\/div>
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees<\/div>

Pastoral scene of the gallant south<\/div>
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth<\/div>
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh<\/div>
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh<\/div>

Here\u2019s a fruit for the crows to pluck<\/div>
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck<\/div>
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop<\/div>
